Special plastic carriers give biofilm a far higher surface area to grow on — producing a consistent quality of treated wastewater.
Overview
A Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor consists of an aeration tank which is similar to an activated sludge tank, with special plastic carriers that provide a higher surface area where a biofilm can grow. Aeration keeps the carriers in constant circulation, so the biofilm is continuously scoured and refreshed.
This is more advanced than conventional treatment and produces a consistent quality of treated wastewater compared to conventional methods. Because the active biomass is attached to the carriers rather than held in suspension, performance does not depend on sludge settleability and the process is far more tolerant of load swings.
It is one of the technologies Ion Agua offers for secondary treatment, alongside the Membrane Bioreactor route.
