Overview
Activated sludge systems are secondary treatment used to remove biological contaminants from wastewater. A mixed culture of micro-organisms is held in suspension, fed with the incoming organic load and supplied with oxygen; the biomass converts dissolved and colloidal organics into cell mass and carbon dioxide, which is then separated from the treated water.
Various technologies can be used for secondary treatment. Ion Agua offers two principal routes — Membrane Bioreactors and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors — and selects between them on the basis of the discharge target, the available footprint, and whether the treated water is going to be reused.

Plastic carriers give biofilm a far higher surface area to grow on, producing a consistent treated quality with a simpler operating regime.
GAC and PAC units remove dissolved organics such as BTEX and PFAS down to the sub parts per billion range.
